PHOEBE-JULIA Webinar: Safe Streets, Safe Lives: Road Safety Models for Vulnerable Road Users

The aim of the upcoming 60min webinar, which will take place on 18 February from 11-12AM, is to highlight different assessment methods to enhance bicycle safety through the perspective of the two EU-funded projects of PHOEBE and JULIA.

According to European Commission statistics, more than 2000 fatalities of cyclists occur annually in the EU27. Thus, EU-funded projects like PHOEBE and JULIA are aiming to increase road safety for these and other vulnerable road user groups by using state-of-the-art technology, such as transport modeling as well as (satellite technology) tools. The webinar will focus on the different (technological) aspects of both projects and their pilot implementations and tests in the two Spanish cities of Valencia and Barcelona. These presentations will be put into a wider context related to the current road safety challenges in Europe.

What is the JULIA project?

JULIA seeks to create a smarter public transport system by leveraging the power of space technology. The project aims to achieve significant improvements:

  • Enhance efficiency and reliability for smoother operations and on-time arrivals for buses and trains.
  • Increase safety in mobility infrastructure. E.g: cycle lanes.
  • Provide a more attractive public transport experience with features that make it more convenient and appealing for travellers.

EU Road Safety Cluster Joint Webinar: Introducing Innovations for Road Safety in Complex Urban Environments

The newly-formed EU Road Safety Cluster, which consists of the EU funded projects of AI4CCAM, EVENTS, FRODDO, HEIDI, PHOEBE and SOTERIA, is inviting you to register for our first joint webinar, which will take place on 25 February 2025, from 14:00-15:00 CET.

This diverse group of projects aims to enhance road safety for users of active and shared mobility, drivers and vulnerable road users by utilising innovative technology, such as artificial intelligence, transport modeling and big data analysis. This data-driven evaluation is combined with co-creative elements, as well as exchange with local stakeholders and policy makers.

What can you expect?

The aim of this hour-long webinar is to give the audience an initial glimpse into the innovative solutions addressed by the cluster’s projects through short spotlight presentations, followed by a brief discussion on current urban road safety challenges. The webinar will also provide opportunities for the audience to join the conversation.

PHOEBE and SOTERIA to speak at joint RTR session

The ‘annual conference on results from road transport research’ (RTR Conference), which will take place from 11-13 February 2025 in the Belgian capital of Brussels, has a great tradition of bringing stakeholder EU projects and EU officials together to provide updates about project results. PHOEBE will provide these insights as part of the parallel session 10 ‘Predictive safety assessment framework and safer urban environment for VRUs’ in collaboration with our sister project SOTERIA. The joint session will take place on 12 February 2025 from 11:45-13:00 at ‘The Egg’ event center in Brussels.

Join our workshop at Walk21 in Lisbon

The PHOEBE project partners POLIS and iRAP will give a joint workshop with the ELABORATOR project on Pedestrian safety: assessment, planning and design, which will take place on 14 October 2024 from 14:00-15:30 CET as part of the training sessions of Walk21 Lisbon.

The 90-minute workshop aimed at local practitioners, specifically working in the Portuguese context, will delve into the ways of systematically assessing the safety of pedestrian infrastructures. With an interactive approach, the workshop wants to hear from participants’ needs and challenges and present the importance of systematic road safety assessment and the methodology and tools from iRAP and the EU projects PHOEBE and ELABORATOR. Ultimately, the workshop can help participants comprehend the application of tools, techniques, and perspectives to the specific local context and provide useful insights for PHOEBE on how to improve its framework to respond to the needs of practitioners and cities.

IRF Global R2T Conference 2024

PHOEBE will participate in the IRF Global R2T Conference, which will take place from 10-14 December 2024 in Orlando, Florida (USA). This conference on roads and mobility offers a vibrant forum for innovators, decision-makers, and industry professionals. Discover cutting-edge advancements and forge pivotal connections in an environment dedicated to shaping the future of transportation. Topics range from road safety to construction, road user charging, ITS and new mobility solutions.

PHOEBE is excited to invite Community of Practice in mid-May

The 1st online meeting of the PHOEBE Community of Practice (CoP) will take place on 14 May 2024 from 15h to 16h CEST. The members of the CoP share a common interest in the topic of road safety and represent a wider group of stakeholders from the industry, civil society, academia and cities from Europe and beyond. In case you would like to participate in the CoP meeting in May and others to come, submit your interest to join PHOEBE CoP here.

This will be the first opportunity for the different professionals to come together and learn more in detail about what PHOEBE has been developing, as well as exchange and discuss road safety. In this first meeting, PHOEBE’s project partners will give the big picture of the project while deep diving into some of the processes of developing the project methodology and main learnings so far.

This exchange will be the kick-off for further discussions, learnings, and advancements on how the project work can continue to improve and adjust within its pilots and beyond. CoP members will be able to visualise how PHOEBE can support the future of road safety, share their expertise, and get ready for an in-person site visit later this year.
